History of Property
In 1922, Swendson's Dairy operated out of this location at 1401 5th NW, featuring a drive-up window for milk and butter from the dairy farm. The Swendson's raised over 100 cows and employed 100 people. They produced 500 gallons of milk a day, often waiting after hours for customers to return milk bottles. In 1948, Swendson went to work for the railroad and his wife, Fern, enlisted the help of her neighbor to assist in the running of the dairy. With the drive-up window and home delivery, the dairy did very well.
Swendson's Dairy finally closed its doors after 40 years of operation. Patrick McClernon, an architect, located his office here in the 1970s and began to do the 1st phase of the renovation, repairing the old window to the west and adding stairs to the 1st floor and 2nd floor of the loft studio. The property was sold to Stefan Watson and his wife, Eileen Devereux ( Architect) when McClernon and his firm closed. In 2018 Watson, an artist and builder, completed a 2nd renovation, upgrading floors, electrical, kitchens, and dug out the basement, adding an additional apartment. For a short while, the offices of Tiles de Santa Fe / Watson Custom Builders were at 1401 5th NW.
